Be a Natural Beauty! Four Safe Alternative Skin Treatments
by Guest Contributor Tara Heath —- Getting gorgeous skin doesn’t require invasive treatments or chemical products. In fact, these can do more harm than good. Here are common cosmetic treatments and their natural, healthier substitutes as alternative skin treatments.
Botox helps to tighten and smooth your skin to boost your youthfulness. We know Botox is basically poison that gets injected into areas of the face to smooth out wrinkles, but research suggests that it could spread from the spot where it’s injected, causing health dangers such as difficulty breathing, while other side-effects of this treatment include numbness and droopy eyelids. Long-term, Botox causes muscles to shrink, which leads to a droopy or sagging face.
Natural Alternative: Face Saver Balls
Acclaimed fitness trainer Yamuna Zake created the Face Saver Ball and it’s of many great alternative skin treatments. This rubbery ball gives your facial muscles a workout, increasing circulation to your skin and tightens it up. By moving the ball over areas of your face that are prone to signs of aging, such as your forehead that displays frown lines, you can smooth your skin naturally without the worry of nasty side-effects or long-term consequences.
Injectable Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid injections are increasingly being used to smooth lines and plump skin, making it a popular choice if you want poutier lips and as one more of several alternatives skin treatments. It works by enhancing your lips’ shape and volume. But the side-effects of this injectable are worrisome, such as itching, discomfort, tenderness, swelling, bruising, pain, and even skin discoloration. The FDA has also reported less common side-effects, such as tissue death, allergic reactions, and raised bumps on the skin. Research has stated that chemically-modified hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are ultimately injecting foreign bodies into the skin, which means that there is always a potential risk involved with such invasive cosmetic treatments.
Natural Alternative: Peppermint Essential Oil
After exfoliating your lips with a wet toothbrush to get rid of dead skin cells, apply a bit of peppermint oil to your lips with a cotton swab. Peppermint essential oil boosts circulation to your lips so that more blood can reach it, which makes your lips swell a bit. Use it as a regular lip balm by mixing it with some lip balm to perfect your pout on the go. Peppermint has a cooling sensation, which is great to make you feel refreshed during the summer.
Hydroquinone is a popular skin lightening treatment but it’s a dangerous chemical that can cause irreversible damage to your skin. The FDA has stated that hydroquinone can cause a skin condition called ochronosis which results in blue or black lesions on the skin which can result in disfigurement. Hydroquinone is also a possible carcinogen that has been banned in many countries.
Natural alternative: Botanical Ingredients in Skin Lightening
Avoid dangerous chemicals in your skin lightening products and opt for natural ingredients instead as these not only successfully treat discoloration and pigment, but nourish your skin so that it can be healthy. Kojic acid is an example. It works by preventing the production of melanin so that it clears skin issues such as age spots, melasma, and sunspots. Natural skin lighteners can also be beneficial to your skin if you don’t have discoloration because they give you a healthy luminous appearance.
Although chemical peels can be an effective way to exfoliate your skin, they cause your skin to peel and become flaky afterwards. Touching these flakes or picking them off can cause damage to the skin, so you have to be patient. Other side-effects that can occur from chemical peels include redness or flushing of the face, which also takes days to be relieved. This is frustrating because you might have to show your face to the world while your skin is recovering from the procedure. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is commonly used during chemical peels to reduce acne scars and sun damage. But the more research is done on it, the more dangerous it appears to be. The International Agency on Cancer Research has marked it as a suspected human carcinogen.
Natural Alternative: Lemons
Lemons contain citric acid that exfoliates your skin by removing dead skin cells. It’s also great for fighting pimples because it’s an astringent. To reap the benefits of glowing, healthy skin, use a lemon and a toothbrush in your regular skincare routine. After cleansing your skin, slice a lemon and gently rub the fleshy side all over your face, concentrating on any problem areas. Then, rub the toothbrush bristles over this juice in circular movements. Don’t wash off the lemon juice when you’re done – let it remain on your skin overnight. The next morning, you’ll have gorgeously fresh and glowing skin.
Having beautiful skin doesn’t require dangerous skin treatments. By using natural alternatives, you not only treat but prevent skin problems, while flaunting healthy and organic skin.
